Unite jets out to help Alitalia
Negotiators from the Unite union have flown out to Rome to help their Italian counterparts currently struggling to save their troubled airline, Alitalia.

Unite's main aim is to ensure that jobs for the company at Heathrow airport are safeguarded against any possible plans that Alitalia executives may decide upon.

It was noted that Alitalia's London-based operations were the biggest outside of Italy, with the possibility of this closing down worrying the union.

Unite national secretary for civil aviation Steve Turner said that there were 300 jobs in areas such as ground handling, cargo, sales, check-in, ticketing and customer services which depended on a good outcome from the talks.

He continued: "That means 300 people and their families who are now very anxious and need their union to fight all the way to save their jobs, and that is exactly what we will be doing today."

However, Alitalia may be handed a lifeline after the Air France boss confirmed his interest in the carrier company.
