Working people face 'tragedy' of latest economic figures
It was revealed yesterday that as well as unemployment jumping by 60,000, the Bank of England's Mervyn King has also warned of negative growth in the economy.

According to a report by community news website 24Dash, the Bank's governor refused to rule out the possibility of a recession as the number of those without jobs grew to 1.67 million across the UK.

However, the news provider added that there was still a rise in employment between April and June of 20,000 to 29.56 million, the second-highest figure on record, with many people of post-retirement age still in the fold.

Despite this, work and pensions minister James Plaskitt emphasised that all was not lost for those who were unemployed as there was "considerable help available to people through Jobcentre Plus".

He added: "There are over 600,000 vacancies available at the moment. The majority of people losing one job are into another in less than three months."

It was added today that the number of claims put in by the unemployed had hit their highest rate since 1992.
